Tricks and tips to get the best vacation home experience:
Find your perfect rental:
- The earlier your group can reserve a vacation home, the better your selection will be. The best properties are reserved early. Reserving your rental home six to twelve months before your travel dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and reserve your vacation home.
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in the Currituck area. Reserve your Currituck rental property in the Spring or Fall to get the benefit of gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the high season.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
- Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer customers an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
- Find a copy of your local visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, travel guides have discounts for nearby restaurants, attractions, and tours.
How to choose the best vacation rental:
- To start, have your group choose a vacation week and a maximum budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. The Lighthouse, Spacious condo steps from the beach and Whalehead Lighthouse has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Currituck rental home search.
- Specific details about bedrooms and bed types is almost always available on booking websites. If they are not listed, email or call the property management company before booking your rental. Remember that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
- Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your rental agreement! Pet fees or costs applied to your contract.
- Does your group require special amenities? Most websites include search filters for amenities. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are available before booking.
Know before you go:
- Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the instructions to your phone.
- Hosts are available to help! Don't be shy to ask any questions during your stay.
- Protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are gone, just like you would back home.
- During check-in, make note of any damages to the property and immediately contact the host. Record all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
- Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay more pleasurable. You will enhance your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors can be a fantastic resource to find the best local beaches.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can often help. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Re-check every room of the vacation property to make sure that you've packed all of your belongings at departure. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Remember to leave feedback! Property owners rely on great ratings to propel new reservations. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other families will will be grateful for your experience find their best vacation rental. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to remedy it.
