★☆ RULES AND REGULATIONS WHEN EXPLORING 4X4 AREA ☆★

☀ Your car must also be licensed and registered for highway use which means motorbikes, all-terrain cars, and utility cars are not allowed.
☀ Vehicles with more than two axles are not allowed for driving on the beach. Likewise, utility cars are not allowed and all-terrain cars are prohibited for non-residents. These cars do not do well in the sand and will likely get stuck.
☀ If you get stuck you have two options: call a commercial towing service or figure out a way to get your car out yourself. Either way, you're going to either spend a lot of money for a towing service or possibly cause damage to your car!
☀ Any law applicable on the roads of North Carolina also apply to off-road cars, including following posted speed limits (15 mph when traveling within 300 feet of any person or animal on the beach), prohibited open containers, and seat belt laws. Make sure to have your license, registration, insurance up-to-date and comfortably accessible.
☀ Pedestrians always have the right of way so make sure to keep an eye out for other beach-goers including family pets. If closer than 300 feet, reduce speed to 5 mph.
☀ From the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day, between 9:00am and 5:00pm, all cars are to be parked in the area east of the dune line, but west of the hard packed sand, and adjacent to the water's edge when parked, and the middle of the beach is considered the "driving lane". No personal items or cars are allowed within the driving lanes.
No parking is allowed on the beach prior to milepost 14 where the beach is not wide enough for other travelers.
☀ There are two types of recreational parking permits: seasonal and 10-day. These permits are nonrefundable and nontransferable so make sure you get the one that best suits your needs. You can apply for your permit here.
☀ You must print all pages of the permit. Page one must be signed in order for the permit to be valid. Keep this page in your glove box. A printed proof of permit must be on display in the driver's lower corner of the windshield while on the beach.
☀ Seasonal passes are complimentary to Currituck County residents and property owners and available to visitors for $150. 10-day passes are $50 for visitors.

TIPS
☀ Let air out of your tires to 15-20 psi before getting to the ramp. This gives your tires more surface area and therefore better traction. Over-inflated tires will make it more likely for your car to get stuck.
☀ Pick your destination in advance and pay special attention to the tides throughout the day! At high tide, many areas are only wide enough for one lane or become impassible altogether. You don't want to wait until the last min. and be stuck or wind up in dangerous conditions.
☀ Fill up your gas tank before driving onto the beach as there are no gas stations in the 4x4 area.
☀ Watch for wild horses! The horses have complimentary reign to roam the beaches of Carova and are protected by law. If you happen to see them, do not attempt to feed or pet them and remain at least 50 feet away at all times to avoid a citation. They are an striking sight though, so make sure you bring a camera!

Many families book their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
• To get the best rental home within budget, we strongly suggest booking in Fall or Spring. You'll enjoy lower rates, better selection, beautiful weather and the absence of large crowds at your favorite Currituck restaurants and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Currituck vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
• Some hosts offer promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if discounts are available for your group.
• Property managers typically offer their guests an option to add vacation insurance.
