Moyock History

Take a trip to another time by visiting Shingle Landing Walk, a three-block area of historic homes and other structures dating from the late 1800's to the early 1900's.

This area was once a seaport and the main routes of travel were by water. In the late 1700's there was an inlet that opened into the Atlantic Ocean just a few miles due east of Moyock. It was called the ''Currituck Inlet.'' It wasn't until the early 1900's that a train station was built, and still later, hard-surface roads. Nothing remains of the train station today.

One of Moyock's early entrepreneurs was Fred M. Poyner, known for starting different businesses such as ''Moyock Bottling Works'' and ''Poyner Oil Company.''

Moyock Bottling Works was the only cola drink company in existence in Currituck County. Mr. Poyner only had one truck and delivered drinks throughout the area. This business stayed active until the late 1920's. The old Moyock Bottling Works building still remains standing. It is located on the corner of Pudding Ridge Road and Tulls Creek Road.

The J.W. Poyner's Country Store was founded on June 16, 1898 as a partnership between J.W. Poyner and Martin C. Poyner.
Downstairs there was a meat counter, ice boxes, and sausages hanging on the rack. In the back of the store there were shoes, boots, dresses and hats. The aroma of freshly baked cookies filled the air as the cookies were baked daily. These goodies were given out to the children while they waited for their parents to shop. They sold furniture upstairs. Poyner's Country Store was similar to what we would consider a one-stop shopping center today.

The first Poyner Store is located on Shingle Landing Road. It was used as a general store until 1903 and is presently unoccupied. The second Poyner Store was constructed in 1903. It is located on the corner of Shingle Landing Road and Oak Street. It is a two-store retail building with unusual diamond shape windows on the side.
